Hokusai is one of the few Japanese artists whose appeal is not restricted to those who understand and appreciate the Eastern idiom in painting. His art has indeed a universal appeal; for despite revolutions in our taste since Hokusai's death in 1849, enthusiasm for his work, and admiration for such masterpieces as his prints 'The Wave', 'Lilies' and 'Fuji in Clear Weather' have in no way lessened.
Limited to 2000 copies. There are 970 items, all of which are illustrated with about 69 in color, arranged chronologically and those in series have been placed in their correct order. Brief notes on the artists, their style of work and environment, as well as on the development of the wood-block print in Japan, link each section. The name of the artist is also shown in Japanese characters. This is a lovely set in beautiful condition. xx, 349; v, 350-673; v, 674-1034 pages. cloth, dust jacket, slipcase. folio.
