Po obsazení Polska Němci musely židovské ženy a dívky, hrdinky této knihy, přihlížet, jak němečtí okupanti vraždí jejich rodiny a sousedy. Staly se nedobrovolnými svědkyněmi zkázy celých komunit původního obyvatelstva. Neměly už co ztratit, a tak – s nezměrnou odvahou, lstivostí a nervy z oceli – vložily své síly do protinacistického odboje. Z původně židovských mládežnických skupinek se staly ilegální buňky odporu. „Dívky z ghett“ úspěšně podplácely stráže gestapa, v bochnících chleba a sklenicích marmelády ukrývaly revolvery a pomáhaly budovat systémy podzemních bunkrů. Úspěšně však také flirtovaly s německými vojáky, uplácely je vínem, whisky a domácí kuchyní a sváděly je svým „árijským“ zjevem, aby je poté bez milosti odpravily. Po německých vlacích vrhaly bomby a vyhazovaly do vzduchu sklady zásob. Ale též ošetřovaly nemocné a vyučovaly děti. O těchto hrdinkách druhé světové války se dodnes příliš nemluví, třebaže jejich zásluhy i oběti byly nesmírné. Ambicí této publikace je tento dluh aspoň zčásti splatit.
