Boehns 8bändiges Werk zur europäischen Modegeschichte vom Mittelalter bis 1914 ist seit seinem Erscheinen in den 20er Jahren ein Standardwerk und wurde stets auch wegen seines lebendigen Stils und der gelungenen Einbindung der Mode in die allgemeine Kulturgeschichte gelobt. 1976 wurde erstmals eine gekürzte und überarbeitete Sonderausgabe in 2 Bänden angeboten (BA 2/77, 122; 3. Auflage BA 8/86). Die Bearbeiterin I. Loschek (vgl. BA 3/85, BA 12/87, ID 6/92, BA 4/94) garantierte dabei für einen kompetenten Umgang mit dem Originaltext, so daß auch der gekürzte 2bändige Boehn (Band 2 siehe in dieser Nr.) längst zum Standardwerk geworden ist.
