Lewis Carroll

    27. leden 1832 – 14. leden 1898

Ten, kdo ji zná a miluje, zná nepochybně i další podivuhodné postavy z těch knížek.

Lewis Carroll skryl do každého příběhu nejméně jeden hlavolam z aritmetiky, algebry či geometrie, a jeho tehdejší čtenáři mu posílali více či méně seriózní řešení.

Sama hlavní postava, neustále ohromená Alenka v bezděčných reakcích na imaginativní svět plný podivuhodných věcí a událostí, Carrollův um logicky svázat absurdum světa v celé šíři a líčená přirozenost i znalost dětského chování, zaručili dílu světové uznání a přerod v klasiku. Toto vydání obsahuje tzv. přívazek. Jsou to totiž dvě knihy v jedné vazbě (136 str. a 154 str.) a původně zřejmě měly vycházet zvlášť.

    • In 1864, Lewis Carroll sent Alice’s Adventures Under Ground , a handwritten and illustrated manuscript, as a gift to Alice Liddell, the daughter of his Oxford dean. This formed the basis for Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland —introducing timeless characters such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, and the Gryphon—although it differs considerably from the later work, with the author himself approving its publication in 1886. Alice’s Adventures Under Ground provides an enchanting glimpse into Carroll’s imaginative process, and deserves to be ranked as a classic for all ages in its own right.

    • Charles L. Dodgson was a Mathematical Lecturer at Oxford, better known as Lewis Carroll. This collection of mathematical puzzles was compiled in 1893, following years of insomnia. Dodgson claimed to have solved every puzzle, without pencil and paper, during his sleepness nights. This incredible feat is difficult to comprehend, even for such a genius. The complexity and good humor of the problems and tales are suggestive of his well-loved "Alice in Wonderland". Dodgson also hints at his pioneering the field of symbolic logic

    • Now more than one hundred years after Lewis Carroll’s immortal "Through the Looking-Glass" was published, lovers of the "Alice" books have a new episode written by Carroll in which Alice meets an aged, bad-tempered wasp who wears a yellow wig. The episode, which was originally intended to follow the White Knight sequence in Chapter VIII, is rich in Carrollian humor, nonsense, and wordplay; and it contains a five-stanza poem referencing the yellow wig. According to Martin Gardner, the discovery and publication of "The Wasp in a Wig" is an event of great significance not only for Carrollians but for anyone interested in language, humor, the adventures of Alice or, for that matter, wasps.
