Michael Fried (born 1939) is as much a poet as he is a critic. His experiences among artworks and art-world luminaries have resulted in a canonized body of criticism, but they have also provided the raw material for many of the poems in his newest collection, 'Promesse du Bonheur'. Fried?s passion, lyricism and humor--lauded by authors such as Allen Grossman and J.M. Coetzee--are on display as he explores great minds and great works of art that have moved him. Along the way, Fried reveals himself to the reader: he is at once a student, unsure of himself, a young man, ambitious and in love, a committed champion of artists and a poet, transmuting the world around him. The book combines the 80 poems, a mix of lyric and prose poems, with 33 photographs--most of them made, all of them chosen by renowned American photographer James Welling

In 'Social Forms: A Short History of Political Art', renowned critic, curator and writer Christian Viveros-Fauné has picked 50 representative artworks --from Francisco de Goya's The Disasters of War (1810-20) to David Hammons' In the Hood (1993)-- that give voice to some of modern art's strongest calls to political action.0In accessible and witty entries on each piece, Viveros-Fauné paints a picture of the context in which each work was created, the artist's background and the historical impact of each contribution. Sometimes artists create projects that subvert existing power structures; sometimes they make artwork so powerful it challenges the very fabric of society. Whether it is Picasso's Guernica and its place at the 1937 World's Fair, or Jenny Holzer's Truisms (1977-79), which still stop us in our tracks, this book tells the story behind some of the most important and unexpected encounters between artworks and the real worlds they engage with

"Featuring R. Crumb's most outrageous sexual comics, Bible of Filth is possibly the dirtiest book around. One of America's most celebrated cartoonists, Crumb helped define cartoon and punk subcultures of the 1960s and 1970s with comic strips like Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, and Keep on Truckin'. The open sexuality of his work, paired with frequent self-deprecation and a free, almost stream-of-consciousness style, has made Crumb into a global voice and a renowned contemporary artist. Originally published in France in 1986 by Futuropolis, the first edition of Bible of Filth was never distributed in the United States because of its graphic sexual content, which included some of Crumb's most explicit comics from underground magazines such as Snatch, Jiz, Zap, XYZ, Big Ass, and Uneeda. This revised and expanded English edition, published by David Zwirner Books, contains all the original pieces from the 1986 volume, with over one hundred pages of additional material. Organized chronologically, there are comics from 1968 to 1986 that were omitted from the first edition and an entirely new selection of work from after 1986. Printed on bible paper and bound in leather, with gold debossing and edging, this volume looks and feels like a traditional bible, with no outward suggestion of what it contains. This revised and expanded Bible of Filth is the perfect introduction for newcomers, while retaining its status as an important collector's item for Crumb enthusiasts around the world."--Publisher's description
