Autor vychází ze své akademicky teoretické i vydavatelsky praktické zkušenosti dvou desetiletí, kdy se profesně věnoval literatuře východní Evropy jako překladatel, literární kritik i vydavatel. Studie rekapituluje literární život a roli spisovatelů ve východní Evropě v posledním půlstoletí. Wachtel zkoumá politické, sociologické i literární podmínky spisovatelů za komunismu a po jeho pádu. Podle něj po roce 1989 skončila „spisovatelská utopie“ vytvořená komunistickými režimy (spolu s nespornou politickou represí zažívali jak oficiální, tak i neoficiální autoři relativně vážené postavení a byli součástí politického a kulturního diskurzu) a autoři se ocitli v realitě, kde si mnozí z nich musí vydělávat jinak než perem a kde se kultivovaná spisovatelská prestiž postupně zhroutila.
