Historia budynków przy ul. Gołębiej 14-20, stanowiących dziś główną siedzibę Wydziału Polonistyki UJ, jest fascynująca od samego początku i znakomicie obrazuje, niczym w pigułce, dzieje Krakowa. Teren, należący wcześniej w fazie lokacyjnej do gminy żydowskiej, zaczął zmieniać swą przynależność wraz z działalnością Akademii Krakowskiej. Przy bezimiennej ulicy, następnie zwanej Garncarską, zmienionej później na Gołębią znalazły pomieszczenie dwie bursy: Sysyniusza i Starnigielska, znakomite drukarnie Hieronima Wietora i Jana Januszowskiego, domy czynszowe, w których mieszkali różni skromni i bardziej znaczący lokatorzy (jak choćby Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz), czasowo mieścił się Konsulat Czechosłowacji, a przez dłuższy czas Instytut Techniczny. Wreszcie po I wojnie światowej gmachy sukcesywnie zaczęli przejmować filologowie z Uniwersytetu. W dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym pomieszczenie znalazło tutaj Studium Słowiańskie, a po II wojnie polonistyka i częściowo inne filologie.

The specificity of anthropological history in Poland is being torn between its craving for originality, i.e. for creativity of new qualities in historical studies, and its sense of a being of epigones, imitative with respect to the already classical historiographical models that had emerged many years ago. On the one hand, anthropological historians are aware of great acievements and value of Polish scholarship, on the other hand, they see the need to catch up world historiography, to fill the gap through research on such issues as mentality, everyday life, cultural patterns etc.
