I v dobách válečných hrůz lze nalézt stopy lidskosti. Strhující kniha už vyšla ve Španělsku ve 40 vydáních a byla přeložena do všech světových jazyků (obzvlášť velký polemický ohlas sklidila v Německu). David Trueba podle ní natočil film, uvedený na filmovém festivalu v Cannes 2003, který je letošním španělským kandidátem na Oscara. Když na konci španělské občanské války ustupují republikánské oddíly k francouzské hranici, rozhodnou se zastřelit skupinu zajatých frankistů. Mezi nimi je i Rafael Sánchez Mazas, zakladatel a ideolog falangy. Podaří se mu ve zmatku popravy uniknout, skrývá se v lese, až ho vypátrá anonymní republikánský voják, který ho má na mušce, ale bez vysvětlení mu daruje život. Na tuto příhodu náhodou narazí novinář a neúspěšný spisovatel, protagonista Cercasovy knihy, který se rozhodne celou událost rekonstruovat a nalézt onoho anonymního vojáka. Při psaní svého „skutečného vyprávění“ narazí na celou řadu otázek, které zůstávají aktuální i dnes, kdy je občanská válka pro Španěly podobně vzdálená jako bitva u Salaminy, a které jsou vysoce zajímavé i pro české čtenáře: co je hrdinství, jaké zločiny lze promlčet, jak se vypořádat s minulostí apod.
