Po váhání mezi vstupem do kláštera a vstupem do námořní pěchoty se v sedmnácti letech rozhodl pro druhou možnost. Po třech letech, čtyřech podvrtnutích kotníku a vážně vyhřezlé ploténce ukončil službu v námořní pěchotě a studoval anglickou literaturu s úmyslem stát se učitelem. Učitelé mají rádi lidi, zejména děti, a on si uvědomil, že jeho láskou je samotné psaní, nikoli jeho vyučování. Svůj titul tedy využil k tomu, aby se stal profesionálním spisovatelem a redaktorem, nejprve ve státní službě a poté v soukromém sektoru. Věnuje se tomu na plný úvazek a na volné noze více než deset let a nevidí důvod, proč by s tím měl brzy přestat.
