Written in the first person, these provocative and surprising renderings of Celtic tales take us on a challenging journey in which the twelve most ancient and extraordinary goddesses of the land reveal their light and dark faces. In the brining their symbolism to life for today they restore our earlier understanding of war, sex, death, and are turned into spiritual encounters.

    • Exploring the presumption of innocence, this book examines its significance within English and Irish criminal law, emphasizing its constitutional protection and real-world implications. It critiques the alignment between legal rhetoric and practice, particularly in light of recent legislative changes. A significant focus is placed on the government's anti-crime package introduced after the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, which is noted for its radical alterations to criminal law and procedure, raising questions about the effectiveness and impact of such reforms.

      • 9 hodin čtení

Examining penal policies in Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand, the book challenges the notion of a universally harsher punitive era in criminal justice. Hamilton critiques current methods used by criminologists to measure punitiveness, arguing for a more nuanced understanding that considers the unique contexts of smaller jurisdictions. Through empirical data, the study reveals significant variations in criminal justice approaches, highlighting the importance of localized perspectives in shaping penal policies.

This book considers the impact of post 9/11 counter-terrorism laws outside of the counter-terrorism context, a process described here as ‘contagion’. It does so via a detailed empirical examination of the impact of counter-terrorism measures on the criminal justice systems of three selected EU countries with varying histories and experience of terrorism, namely, the UK, France and Poland. In particular, the book explores the synergistic relationship between counter-terrorism measures and control measures aimed at ‘ordinary’ crimes and asks what the implications are for the direction of travel of the criminal law in general. It probes the hegemonic power of terrorism and the securitisation agenda more broadly and discusses the implications for criminology as a discipline – does it, for example, have a role in social contestation of contagion? This book will be suitable for academics and students interested in political violence, terrorism and counterterrorism as well as practitioners and experts working in the area.
