Román Doktor Živago, dlouhá léta ve vlasti autora i u nás obestřený fluidem zakázaného, vyvolal rozruch a paniku hned v r. 1956, kdy jej Pasternak dopsal a nabídl k uveřejnění. Neuspěl. O rok později vyšel rusky v Itálii, zanedlouho pak italsky, anglicky, švédsky, norsky, francouzsky a německy. Roku 1958 byla spisovateli udělena Nobelova cena, kterou však byl donucen odmítnout… Jednotlivé části románu zachycují klíčové okamžiky života titulního hrdiny Jurije Živaga, spojené s významnými společenskými událostmi v Rusku: 1905 – ruská revoluce a stávky dělníků, první světová válka, revoluce 1917, porevoluční vývoj. Jako červená nit se románem vine láska, děj je rovněž prostoupen úvahami o smyslu života a umění. Mimořádnou roli sehrává v díle náhodná osudovost, která vstupuje do životů jednotlivých postav a vzájemně je propojuje. Hope Against Hope recounted the last four years in the life of the great Russian poet, Osip Mandelstam, and gave a hair-raising account of Stalin's terror. Hope Abandoned complements that earlier masterpiece, and in it Nadezhda Mandelstam describes their life together from 1919, and her own after Mandelstam's death in a labour camp in 1938. She also sets out his system of values and beliefs, and provides striking portraits of many of their contemporaries including Boris Pasternak and their champion till his own downfall, Nikolai Bukharin, as well as an astonishingly candid picture of Anna Akhmatova.
