Kniha Podat ruku ďáblovi je autentickým svědectvím o jedné z nejhorších genocid 20. století. V červenci roku 1993 se stal generál Roméo Dallaire velitelem mírové mise UNAMIR ve Rwandě. Snažil se o stabilizaci násilím zmítané a etnicky rozdělené africké země a marně varoval mezinárodní společenství o chystaných masakrech. Když v dubnu 1994 propukla genocida, během níž bylo za zhruba sto dní brutálně zavražděno více než 800 000 lidí, dostal rozkaz nezasahovat a stáhnout mírové jednotky ze země. Als Kommandeur der UN-Blauhelme wurde General Roméo Dallaire 1993 nach Ruanda geschickt. Er sollte einen wackeligen Frieden zwischen den verfeindeten Volksgruppen der Hutu und Tutsi sichern. Extremisten in der ruandischen Regierung hatten jedoch längst einen Völkermord geplant und dabei das Zaudern der Vereinten Nationen einkalkuliert. Verzweifelt versuchte Dallaire, den Völkermord zu verhindern. Vergeblich. Wielu żołnierzy zarówno przed nim, jak i po nim doznało zespołu stresu pourazowego, jednak Romeo Dallaire ucierpiał niejako do kwadratu jako bezpośredni świadek rzezi setek tysięcy ludzi oraz jako dowódca, który pomimo wszelkich starań nie mógł jej zapobiec. Przejmujący opis zmian w psychice, walki z samym sobą i systemem pokazuje, że każdy z nas może się kiedyś zmierzyć z tym problemem. Polecam. Niosą na swych barkach ciężar minionego koszmaru, który w ich przeżyciu powtarza się wciąż i wciąż na nowo, nie pozwalając zapomnieć, nie pozwalając znaleźć ukojenia. O tym właśnie opowiada kanadyjski generał Romeo Dallaire. Poprzez upublicznienie informacji na temat swojego cierpienia z powodu PTSD daje też nadzieję, że można zwrócić się o pomoc; pokazuje, że przyznanie się do problemów nie jest wyrazem słabości, a odwagi.
