Ukrajinci jako jedni z málo evropských národů prožili tak nešťastné dějiny, plné násilí, útlaku a odnárodňování. Dokonce i v raném středověku měl ukrajinský národ svůj vlastní stát Kyjevskou Rus, tzv., státní útvar všech východních a jihovýchodních Slovanů před vznikem moderního ukrajinského, který si později stejně přisvojili samozvanci z Kremlu. Pak Ukrajinu čekala mongolsko-ruská pohroma, po ní nadvláda Litvy a pak ještě Polska. V publikaci lze přečíst o zajímavém období Hetmanštiny v rámci expandující Moskevské říši, která byla během 18. století brutálně zlikvidována. Již v roce 1918 došlo k obnově ukrajinské samostatnosti, která však měla díky ruské agresi jen jepičí život (nikoliv v roce 1919 jak mylně uvádí vydavatel ve své nepovedené recenzi). Rusové však Ukrajince za samostatný národ nikdy nepovažovali, v rámci formálně samostatné Ukrajinské sovětské republiky přišly další útrapy jako umělý hlad - Genocida ukrajinského národa, komunistické odnárodňování, Černobyl, Tuzla, ruská válka - doposud. Teprve rozpad Svazu socialistických republik umožnil i Ukrajincům získat novu samostatnost, ale i dnes oni musí nyní znovu bojovat za svůj stát a chránit ukrajinské obyvatelstvo v nerovném bojí s vnitřním a vnějším ruským okupantem.
