Wolfgang Hilbig (1941–2007) byl východoněmecký spisovatel, který v roce 1985 odešel do západního Německa. Jeho román Provizorium (Das provisorium, 2000) reflektuje tuto dvojí zkušenost. Hlavním hrdinou je východoněmecký spisovatel C., který získal dlouhodobé vízum do SRN, avšak cítí se nespokojený a neschopný žít nebo pracovat. Vnímá své místo na světě jako provizorium, mezi zónami, kde na Východě chybí svoboda a Západ je příliš konzumní. Román také zachycuje pocity východních Němců po převratu, jejich deziluze vyplývající z přehnaných očekávání a neschopnosti skloubit minulost s přítomností. Hlavní hrdina je uznávaný, ale paralyzovaný strachem z veřejných čtení a literární kritiky, propadá alkoholu a je neschopen lásky, zmítající se mezi dvěma ženami. Dílo zobrazuje trýznivou cestu vykořeněného člověka, který se pohybuje mezi dvěma světy a nakonec volí menší zlo. Je to také podobenství o jedinci, jenž se nedokáže vyrovnat s rychlým a složitým moderním světem. Hilbig tak vystihuje pocity mnoha stárnoucích lidí v nové společnosti, nejen v Německu.
