V knize se filosofka a genderová teoretička vyrovnává s námitkami, které jí byly adresovány po vydání spisu Potíže s rodem (Gender Trouble, 1990). Ty se týkají především otázky tělesnosti jakožto materiality, otázky, která se jejím kritikům zdála v raném pojetí performativní konstituce genderu, jak jej Butlerová rozpracovává, nedostatečně zohledněny. Butlerová se v reakci na tyto námitky snaží ukázat, jakým způsobem je sama otázka tělesnosti jakožto materiality od samého počátku podmíněna symbolickými mechanismy.
