V prosinci 1941 vyplula z rumunského přístavu Konstanca pod panamskou vlajkou loď Struma, plná židovských uprchlíků mířících z válčící Evropy do Palestiny. Byla však 24. února 1942 torpedována sovětskou ponorkou SC-213. Úřady nikdy oficiálně neoznámily, proč k tomu došlo. Z celkem 767 lidí na palubě přežil celou tragédii jen jeden člověk.
