Téměř vše, co děláme, se zakládá na vědění o světě kolem nás: jak se ráno oblékáme, jak si vedeme v práci, jak jednáme s jinými lidmi – to vše má základ v našem porozumění tomu, co víme o životě. Vědění může být nahlíženo jako nejpodstatnější a současně nejméně prozkoumaný rys sociálního života: o vědění uvažujeme většinou jako o technickém (vědeckém) vědění nebo jako o formálním vědění (jehož se dosahuje akademickým vzděláním). To, co víme, je v našem každodenním rutinním jednání sotva znatelné, neodhaluje to svůj status jako něčeho „poznaného“ – dokud si to nevyžádá nějaká naléhavá událost. Tato kniha se soustřeďuje zejména na sociální porozumění fenoménu vědění. Její autoři vědění znovu ustavují jako součást diskuse o tom, jak my jako individua, skupiny i moderní společnost produkujeme a reprodukujeme vědění jako základ našich životů. K vědění přistupují jako k sociálnímu jevu, a to tím, že postupně odhalují součásti a sociální uspořádání, v nichž je vědění produkováno a předáváno k použití. Shrnutě a výstižně řečeno: aktuálnost obsahu této publikace předběhla naše očekávání; objasnění forem vědění, které umožní přežití liberálně demokratických ideálů a forem jednání i vládnutí, je dnes navýsost aktuální.

Talk of knowledge is ubiquitous in the modern world. Whether we talk of know-how, innovation or education, knowledge is always involved. But despite its prominence, knowledge often remains nebulous. This book explores the category of knowledge from a sociological perspective, and traces the concept of knowledge as the very fabric of modern society.

The book comprises three parts devoted to the many facets and the remarkable range of Nico Stehr’s oeuvre. Part 1 provides an introduction to the significance of his pioneering work and career. Part 2 demonstrates the practical application of Nico Stehr’s research as seen through the eyes of eminent scholars. Part 3 presents a selection ofthe milestones of his publications.

Die unverstandene Kultur ist die Suche nach Versatzstücken einer Kulturtheorie der Mediengesellschaft - mit dem Ziel der Erneuerung einer kritischen Kommunikationswissenschaft.
