Většina autorových děl jsou sugestivní psychologické studie osamělých, nešťastných, někdy až patologicky zvrácených jedinců, deformovaných bídnými sociálními podmínkami i nedostatkem lásky v dětství. Dvě novoromantické povídky, ve kterých je cítit vliv Freuda a Dostojevského. Jde o příběhy, zobrazující dehumanizaci lidské osoby a její vnější i vnitřní rozklad. Autor se nevyhýbá ani naturalistickému popisu zvrhlých lidských popudů, aby tak dotvořil a posílil atmosféru svého vypravování.

Boys & Murderers is the first collection of novellas and stories in English translation from Hermann Ungar, author of the highly-acclaimed novel The Maimed. A writer of unique talent whose life was prematurely ended by illness, he was much admired by Thomas Mann, who prefaces this volume, and known as the “Moravian Dostoevsky” for his analysis of the human psyche. In fiction that is often grotesque and comical, Ungar explores the depravities of the heart and delusions of the mind. Taking Prague as well as his hometown of Boskovice for his settings, he can be located in that illustrious tradition of both Prague German writers (he was associated with Max Brod in the Prague Circle) and Jewish writers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, such as Joseph Roth. Forgotten for decades, Ungar's work has experienced a renaissance over the past years with translations appearing in a number of languages and new editions appearing in German, which has allowed him to take his place among the greats of 20th-century European literature. Tato kniha byla vydána českým nakladatelstvím Twisted Spoon Press, které sídlí v Praze a vydává díla českých a slovanských autorů v anglickém jazyce. Oficiální anotace nakladatele: Set in Prague, The Maimed relates the story of a highly neurotic, socially inept bank clerk who is eventually impelled by his widowed landlady into servicing her sexual appetites. At the same time he must witness the steady physical and mental deterioration of his lifelong friend who is suffering from an unnamed disease. Part psychological farce, Ungar tells a dark, ironic tale of chaos overtaking one's meticulously ordered life. One of only two novels Ungar wrote, this translation marks the first time his work has appeared in English. His novellas and short stories are collected in Boys & Murderers.

Set in pre-WWI Prague, the story follows Josef Blau, a high school teacher grappling with insecurity stemming from his lower social status compared to his privileged students. His obsession with maintaining order and discipline leads him to paranoia, fearing his students will exploit any weakness. Simultaneously, he struggles with jealousy over his attractive wife, compelling her to alter her appearance in a misguided attempt to control her fidelity. As his mental state deteriorates, the threat of catastrophe looms over his life.

Die Edition Sämtlicher Werke präsentiert erstmals alle überlieferten Werke und Briefe des Dichters in einer kritischen Textgestalt. Der dritte Band umfasst neben wenigen Gedichten die Dramen "Krieg", "Der rote General" und die vollständige Fassung der erotischen Komödie "Die Gartenlaube". Zudem sind sämtliche zwischen 1918 und 1930 veröffentlichten Feuilletons sowie nahezu alle erhaltenen Briefe enthalten. Abgerundet wird die Edition durch eine umfassende Bibliographie der Primär- und Sekundärliteratur, die eine tiefere Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk ermöglicht.

In "Die Verstümmelten" beleuchtet Hermann Ungar die existenziellen Ängste und inneren Konflikte seiner Charaktere, die in einer von Entfremdung und Isolation geprägten Welt leben. Der Roman folgt den Schicksalen von Menschen, die an den gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen scheitern und sich in einer düsteren Realität wiederfinden. Ungar schafft eine dichte Atmosphäre, die die psychologischen Verstümmelungen und seelischen Narben der Protagonisten eindringlich darstellt, während er gleichzeitig Themen wie Identität und das Streben nach Zugehörigkeit behandelt.
