Na pozadí vídeňské společnosti přelomu století tu rakouský hudební sociolog vytváří obraz umělce jdoucího všemi silami za svou tvůrčí vizí. Autor si rovněž klade otázku, co způsobilo po letech odmítání mahlerovský boom druhé poloviny 20. století. Text knihy autor pro české vydání revidoval, přeložily jej Jitka Ludvová a Jana Pátková.
