Adolf Hitler se narodil v Rakousku 20. dubna 1889. V mládí přesídlil do Německa a za Velké války sloužil v německé armádě. Po válce se krátce zapletl do radikální politiky v Mnichově, ale v roce 1919 se definitivně vystěhoval do New Yorku. Po dobu, kdy se učil anglicky, si na živobytí vydělával jako pouliční malíř a příležitostný překladatel v Greenwich Village, newyorském útočišti bohémy. Po několika letech života v USA začal kreslit ilustrace do časopisů a comicsů. Jeho první ilustrace se objevila na stránkách Amazing v roce 1930. V roce 1932 už byl známým ilustrátorem sci-fi a roku 1935 věřil své angličtině natolik, že debutoval jako autor. Zbytek života pak zasvětil science fiction jako spisovatel, ilustrátor a vydavatel fanzinů. Přestože dnes je mezi fanoušky SF znám především díky svým románům a povídkám, ve Zlatém věku SF – třicátých letech – byl oblíbeným ilustrátorem, sestavil několik antologií, psal břitké recenze a téměř deset let vydával populární fanzin Storm (Bouře). Na Worldconu v roce 1955 získal posmrtně cenu Hugo za román Pán svastiky, který dokončil těsně před svou smrtí v roce 1953.
