Herbert Spencer

    27. duben 1820 – 8. prosinec 1903

Herbert Spencer byl vlivný myslitel viktoriánské éry, jehož rozsáhlé dílo se zabývalo všezahrnujícím konceptem evoluce jako postupného vývoje napříč fyzickým světem, organismy, lidskou myslí a společnostmi. Byl horlivým zastáncem evolučních myšlenek a rozvíjel je v široké škále oborů, včetně etiky, náboženství, antropologie, ekonomie, politické teorie, filozofie, literatury, biologie, sociologie a psychologie. Spencer je nejvíce známý svým spojením termínu „přežití nejschopnějších“, který přejal z Darwinových myšlenek a rozšířil jej do sociologie a etiky.
