K jejich osudovému setkání dojde na ostrově Mauricius, kam v roce 1940 připlula loď Atlantic se zhruba 1500 židovskými utečenci ze střední Evropy, z nichž několik stovek pocházelo z bývalého Československa. Britské úřady jim z politických a taktických důvodů nepovolily zůstat v Palestině, kam se po velkých útrapách málem dostali, ale zřídily pro ně internační tábor ve starém vězení na Mauriciu. Docházelo k násilí i bezpráví, na které by se rádo zapomnělo. Zapomenout se pokusil i Rádž, ale jako sedmdesátník k sobě vzpomínku na svého posledního bratra, na Davida, pustí zpět. Nathacha Appanah kouzelným jazykem připomíná krutou, téměř neznámou součást dějin naší západní civilizace, viděnou očima dítěte.
