V roce 1965 se organizace sdružující americké spisovatele science fiction rozhodla každoročně odměňovat nejlepší díla udělením ceny Nebula, která má podobu těžké kostky z čirého skla s barevnými polodrahokamy, tvořícími spirální galaxii. Cena se původně udělovala ve čtyřech kategoriích, ale postupně se rozšířila. V roce 1973 Jerry Pournelle, tehdejší prezident organizace, navrhl cenu pro vyzdvihnutí celoživotního díla autorů, kteří přispěli k rozvoji SF. Nová cena, nazvaná Velmistr, je větší a těžší než Nebula a může být udělena pouze šesti žijícím autorům za deset let. Do roku 1999 ji obdrželo pouhých patnáct spisovatelů, včetně Frederik Pohl, jednoho z nejúspěšnějších autorů SF. Pohl v této knize sestavil výběr povídek od významných autorů jako Andre Nortonová, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Alfred Bester a Ray Bradbury. Pohl měl možnost se s těmito autory seznámit jako vydavatel, agent či přítel, což mu usnadnilo výběr. Kniha obsahuje povídky, které dokumentují styl a umění jednotlivých autorů, a každému autorovi je připojen stručný životopis a komentář. Wan-To byl nejstarší a nejmocnější inteligencí ve vesmíru, bytostí, která si hrála s hvězdnými systémy jako si hraje dítě s kuličkami. Pátý díl slavné ságy o rase Heecheeů. Záhadní Heecheeové byli možná největší a nejmučivější tajemství, se kterým se lidská rasa kdy setkala. První heecheeské artefakty byly nalezeny na Venuši, a zpočátku nebyly považovány za nic víc než cenné suvenýry a kuriozity pro turisty ze Země nebo Marsu. Ale když byl objeven asteroid plný vesmírných lodí s automatickým navigačním systémem, vesmír Heecheeů se doširoka otevřel, přivedl na svět Korporaci Gateway. A přinesl nepředstavitelné bohatství dobrodruhům, kteří riskovali cesty do neznáma, aby poznali, kam je heecheeské lodě zanesou. Mnozí z těchto statečných se nikdy nevrátili. Cesta na Gateway líčí příběhy prvních, velmi nebezpečných cest, úžasných objevů a neohrožených průkopníků, kteří sledovali činnost nezachytitelných Heecheeů a navždy změnili průběh historie lidské rasy!

Robinette Broadhead si užívá svých peněz, ale protože mu problém Heecheeů nedává spát, zakládá vlastní kosmickou korporaci, která se má zabývat shromažďováním poznatků o těchto mimozemšťanech. Průzkum vesmíru odhaluje ve Sluneční soustavě ještě několik velkých seskupení heecheeovského kovu. Jedním z objektů je pravděpodobně Továrna na potraviny, která by mohla od lidstva zahnat přízrak hladu. Výprava, která tam přistane, se setkává s chlapcem jménem Wan, potomkem zahynuvších prospektorů. A Wan je doslova pokladnicí znalostí o heecheeovských artefaktech. Lidstvo tedy mimo jiné konečně zjišťuje, k čemu slouží tzv. modlitební vějíře. A navíc, Wan mnohokrát cestoval lodí Heecheeů do podivného místa, které obývají tajemní Mrtví a Staří. Je možné, že jsou to legendární Heecheeové?

První díl slavné ságy o rase Heechee. Lidstvo nachází ve Sluneční soustavě zařízení a stavby tajemné cizí rasy, která dostane jméno Heechee. Jejich technologie byla velmi rozvinutá a některé artefakty se ukázaly jako velmi přínosné a lidmi dobře využité. Nikdo ovšem neví, jak Heechee vypadali ani kam odletěli. Největším objevem je asteroid Gateway, cosi jako kosmická stanice s přibližně tisícovkou funkčních mezihvězdných lodí. Každá je naprogramovaná k nadsvětelnému letu na vzdálené místo kdesi v neprobádaném vesmíru. Není možné je řídit, ale přesto se hlásí dobrovolníci, prospektoři, kteří se těmito loděmi vydávají do neznáma. Někdy najdou poklad, jindy – smrt.

Spojené státy za sto let. Přelidněný svět ovládají gigantické reklamní společnosti. Zabití v rámci průmyslové msty se považuje za běžný přestupek, ale zabití bez výstrahy - to je obchodní urážka. Právě v tomto okamžiku je biologické stáří Johna Williama Washingtona, kterému stará chůva a šest přátel říká obvykle „Sandy“, dvacet dva let a jedenáct měsíců. Poslední dílo pravděpodobně největšího z autorů SF, jehož vydání se již nedočkal, napsané na základě stostránkových Clarkeových poznámek ve spolupráci s dalším velikánem této generace autorů SF, Frederikem Pohlem, se stalo skutečnou literární událostí a více než důstojným Clarkeovým rozloučením. Román nepostrádá velké vědecké myšlenky, na něž jsme u autora zvyklí, ale je také doprovázen určitým ironickým nadhledem nad lidskou pošetilostí. Poslední teorém je příběhem jedné matematické obsese a oslavou lidského ducha a vědy. Současně však dobrodružným vyprávěním, v němž lidstvo čelí svému vyhubení všemocnými mimozemšťany a, aby přežilo, je nuceno potlačit své politické a náboženské rozpory. Srílanský student Randžít Subramanian vyřeší Velkou Fermatovu větu jen prostředky známými ve Fermatově době, čímž získává nejen slávu a bohatství, ale i povolání do tajné organizace Pax per Fidem usilující o zklidnění politických rozporů na Zemi. Tak se dostává do středu celosvětových konfliktů, při jejichž řešení by se měl uplatnit i jeho mimořádný talent. Mezitím se však k Zemi blíží nepřátelské lodě s cílem vyhladit celému vesmíru nebezpečné lidské pokolení.

Čtvrtý díl slavné ságy o rase Heecheeů. Na Gatewayi probíhá velká oslava u příležitosti stého výročí jejího objevení. Účastní se jí davy veteránů boje o ovládnutí kosmu s využitím technologií Hecheeů. Přítomen je i Robinette Broadhead, třebaže už dlouho existuje jen ve formě zapsané strojové inteligence. Přesto i nadále využívá každé příležitosti, aby mohl tahat za provázky galaktické politiky. Od prvního setkání lidí a Heecheeů uplynulo již hodně let. Obě civilizace učinily společné kroky, aby se připravily na nebezpečí spojené s eventuálním návratem Vrahů - netělesných bytostí vytvořených s enrgií, které ničí všechny civilizace, s nimiž se stkají. A hlídky nepřetržitě střeží kugelblitz, černou díru, kde se skrývá nepřítel, vyhlašují poplach...
