Literatura o Nietzschem je rozsáhlá a neustále se rozrůstá. Existuje množství různých a mnohdy nesmiřitelných teorií o jeho filosofii, ale R. J. Hollingdale se domnívá, že úvod k Nietzschemu by se neměl stát úvodem k jeho komentátorům a kritikům. Namísto polemik uvádí co nejvíce citací: účelem knihy je přimět čtenáře, aby si přečetl Nietzscheho sám a stal se sám sobě vykladačem jeho díla. Tato obsáhlá monografie o jedné z nejvýznamnějších postav filosofie 19. století, která měla obrovský vliv na sociokulturní formování století našeho, je považována odbornou veřejností za jednu z nejlepších na dané téma. Zvláštní pozornost autor věnuje vztahu mezi Nietzscheho filosofickým dílem a utvářením politických schémat a jejich pohybu, jež souvisely s oživováním zájmu o tohoto myslitele. Hollingdale neopomíjí ani další Nietzscheho aktivity: poezii, filologii či zájem o hudbu.

Spis, který se v chronologii Nietzschova díla nalézá mezi Lidským, příliš lidským a Radostnou vědou, je souborem úvah, postřehů a aforismů, promyšleně seskupených do pěti knih, které nemají vlastní názvy, jsou však komponovány kolem tematických těžišť. Nietzsche v nich kriticky a s neobyčejnou psychologickou pronikavostí analyzuje základní mravní představy evropské kultury, morální kořeny křesťanství, altruistické etiky ad. "Myšlenky o morálních předsudcích" tak tvoří počátek cesty, kterou pozdní Nietzsche nazve "přehodnocením všech hodnot".

Nečasové úvahy vycházely postupně v letech 1873–1876. Tvoří důležitou součást Nietzschovy rané filosofie, jejíž půdorys byl rozvržen v prvotině Zrození tragédie z ducha hudby. Zejména v druhé, nejznámější úvaze O užitku a škodlivosti historie pro život přicházejí ke slovu některé náměty a postupy, které mají zásadní význam pro Nietzschovu filosofii jako celek.

Polemický spis Genealogie morálky (1887) patří k Nietzschovým pozdním pracím. Výjimečně v něm opouští aforistickou formu a píše jej v červenci roku 1887 během pouhých tří týdnů jako své snad nejucelenější dílo. Už v předchozí knize Mimo dobro a zlo (1886), bezprostředně následující po Zarathustrovi, začíná Nietzsche pracovat na své koncepci „vůle k moci“ a zhruba v době, kdy vzniká Genealogie morálky, si Nietzsche také plně uvědomuje, že „kritika morálky“ v širším smyslu může sloužit jako způsob, jak nepřímo, ale názorně předvést, že k povaze bytí neodmyslitelně patří moc, protože k ní patří možnost změny smyslu. Zároveň si v ohlédnutí zpět uvědomuje, že z tohoto důvodu je polemika proti morálce, proti úsilí o nalezení posledního smyslu pro naše poznání i jednání, nutně tím, co spojuje různé, často velmi odlišné fáze jeho myslitelské cesty. Z tohoto hlediska je třeba číst i jeho kritiku morálky v užším slova smyslu, tj. kritiku určitého morálního ideálu.

This is a translation of both volumes of Nietzsche's Human, All Too Human. The first volume appeared in 1878, just before Nietzsche abandoned his academic life. In 1886 it was republished, incorporating in a second volume two books of aphorisms which Nietzsche had published in the meantime.
