This insightful book explores the theme of disappearance in the 1970s performance art of Bas Jan Ader, Chris Burden, and Jack Goldstein.

Curator Robert Fleck, who selected Herbert Brand's work for the Austrian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale, sees him as one of very few painters making significant contributions to the debate in both figurative and abstract art. Brandl, Fleck notes, "numbers among the most audible voices of a generation that abandoned the heritage of Minimalism in favor of a free iconographic vocabulary which contains traces of the visible environment as well as non-figurative forces, lines and color fields, visualizing the speed and spaces of life." Brandl, born in 1959, was given the entire Austrian Pavilion and presented some 20 new pieces, abstract and figurative, individual and in series, in varying formats; this book includes every piece shown, and a survey of the work that led up to it, from 2005 to 2007.

Daniel Richter's earliest paintings depict a colorful, hallucinatory cosmos somewhere between graffiti and objectless abstraction. A few years ago, already a star on the German scene, he opted to shift his focus and devote himself entirely to figuration and historical painting. By taking up and advocating for once-maligned and neglected genres, Richter politicized his paintings--not on the world stage but on the art-world stage--and connected to the art of the 1980s. Richter's most recent works combine set pieces from art history, mass media and pop culture to create his own worlds and narratives. Daniel Richter, conceived and designed in collaboration with the artist, presents selected works from the past five years, up to his latest.
