Cette autobiographie illustrée d'Erwin Blumenfeld, retrace "l'odyssée, singulière, insolite et violente" de l'un des plus grands photographes de mode du XXe siècle. Né à Berlin à la fin du XIXe siècle, de parents juifs, il vécut le double effondrement d'un monde à travers la démence des deux guerres mondiales et n'en réchappa que grâce à une incroyable volonté de vivre. Exposition "Erwin Blumenfeld" au Jeu de Paume (Paris) du 15 octobre 2013 au 26 janvier 2014.

Erwin Blumenfeld gehörte zu den gefragtesten und bestbezahlten Modefotografen seiner Zeit. Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan und Life waren seine Auftraggeber. Beeinflusst von den Surrealisten und der künstlerischen Avantgarde unterwanderte er schon mit seinen frühen Modeaufnahmen die Konventionen des Genres und beeindruckte durch seine Originalität und Perfektion. Von seinem umfangreichen farbfotografischen Werk waren bislang nur die für Magazinlayouts bearbeiteten Aufnahmen bekannt. Für dieses Buch wurden die Originaldias aus dem Archiv geborgen und die Farben akribisch rekonstruiert. So sind seine Kompositionen erstmals in ihrer ursprünglichen Form und Farbigkeit zu sehen.

By the mid-1950s, Erwin Blumenfeld's fame had spread throughout the USA and Europe to make him the world's most highly paid photographer. This study discusses the life and work of this extraordinary man. Highly inventive, he developed his own idiosyncratic language, using solarization and negative printing, double and multiple exposures and a host of hybrid techniques. The work also brings together a retrospective selection of Blumenfeld's diverse achievements including drawings, collages and photographs of all genres.
