The 'Jahrbuch der Psychoanalyse' (Yearbook of Psychoanalysis) was founded in 1960 as a scholarly medium for publication and discussion of the German Psychoanalytic Association. Its initial goal was to end the exile of psychoanalytic research and treatment, which had suffered heavy losses due to the rupture of civilization under National Socialism, as much as possible, to bring it back into use and to improve its potential for development. "Working in our own country while maintaining a constant exchange of ideas with the work of the psychoanalytic writers in the entire world": This was the task which Anna Freud entrusted to the 'Jahrbuch der Psychoanalyse' in 1960. It is still valid today as the basic principle of the dialogue in the diversity of psychoanalytic schools of thought.Without any commitment to a specific school of thought, the 'Jahrbuch' is based on the idea of the optionality of every interpretation which is protected from arbitrariness based on loyalty to a certain method. This idea applies to all the categories in the 'Jahrbuch': clinical practice, clinical theory, metapyschology as well as applied psychoanalysis. In addition, it supports the long tradition of translations of the pre-released talks held at the international psychoanalytic conferences and the publication of the annual Karl Abrahan and the Wolfgang Loch lecture. The 'Jahrbuch' focuses on the psychoanalytic-methodological essentials as prerequisites for the development of the wealth of experience and applications of psychoanalysis and tries to promote connections to the international discussion as well as the dialogue with neighboring disciplines from the fields of science, art and society.Peer-reviewing, which was introduced in 2002, has helped with the selection and the improvement of the articles submitted. The regular publication of volumes on specific subjects has challenged the editorial staff and the publisher to provide a comprehensive introduction of a topic from various perspectives and ensure that this becomes a part of the scholarly discourse on this specific subject. The profile of the 'Jahrbuch' is rounded out by the "supplements" in which pertinent monographs are published. Is learning disability determined from birth?Psychoanalysis has always striven to reconstruct damaged human subjectivity. However, with a few exceptions, people with learning disabilities have long been excluded from this enterprise as a matter of course. It has been taken for granted that learning disability is a deficient state in which psychodynamics play but a minor role and where development is irrevocably determined by organic conditions.First published in German in 1980s and published here in English for the first time, this brave and provocative book was one of the first to attempt to understand learning disabilities in terms of psychoanalysis and socio-psychology. Controversially, the author does not distinguish between a primary organic handicap and a secondary psychological one; rather, she argues that it is developed from the very outset of the process of socialisation during the interaction of caregiver and infant, and therefore gives the analyst room to work on this maladapted socialisation. She illustrates the effectiveness of this theory when put into practice in a number of illuminating case studies.Still as influential and powerful as when it was first published, Nameless will be of interest to psychoanalysts and clinicians from across the mental health services who work with people with learning disabilities.

Die Bedeutung des „ganz normalen“ Alltags in der Betreuungsarbeit wird durch die Verbindung von psychoanalytischer Theorie und pädagogischer Praxis nachvollziehbar und in Dialogform dargestellt. Was bedeutet der Begriff Integration für die Arbeit mit Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung, die Jahrzehnte ihres Lebens in psychiatrischen Anstalten unter schlechtesten Bedingungen verbringen mussten? Die Ausgliederung und gesellschaftliche Reintegration von Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung aus einer psychiatrischen Anstalt wird in Form von Dialogen der drei Autorinnen dargestellt und gibt Antwort auf die Eingangsfrage. Während ihrer Zusammenarbeit über einen längeren Zeitraum wurde die Brisanz und Ambivalenz dieser Frage immer deutlicher. Erst durch die Verbindung von psychoanalytischer Theorie und pädagogischer Praxis wird hier die Bedeutsamkeit des „ganz normalen“ Alltags in der Betreuungsarbeit sichtbar. Ausgehend von konkreten Erfahrungen aus dem pädagogisch-betreuerischen Alltag in Wohngruppen wird aufgezeigt, dass diese Verbindung andere Möglichkeiten des Verstehens schafft. Mit psychoanalytischer Deutung und Erläuterung werden Entwicklungen durchsichtig und nachvollziehbar. Somit können sich neue Entwicklungsräume öffnen. Daraus entwickelte sich eine Arbeitsform, die sich als ungewöhnlich fruchtbar erwies.
