Playing on the computer has become an integral part of contemporary media culture. Computer games are played by people of nearly all ages and social standings. Accordingly, the computer game industry has long enjoyed revenues comparable to those of the film industry, and there is a growing recognition of computer games as a form of "art." Against this backdrop, it is hardly surprising that academic interest in computer games has significantly increased in recent years, with the still relatively young medium being examined from a variety of methodological and epistemological perspectives. At the same time, among the multitude of trans-, multi-, and interdisciplinary approaches to computer games, initial movements toward consolidation have emerged, leading to the establishment of several canonized approaches within Game Studies. The contributions gathered in this volume provide a comprehensive overview and critical assessment of current approaches in media studies and interdisciplinary research on computer games.
