This monograph describes the latest advances in discriminative learning methods for biometric recognition. Specifically, it focuses on three representative categories of methods: sparse representation-based classification, metric learning, and discriminative feature representation, together with their applications in palmprint authentication, face recognition and multi-biometrics. The ideas, algorithms, experimental evaluation and underlying rationales are also provided for a better understanding of these methods. Lastly, it discusses several promising research directions in the field of discriminative biometric recognition.

This book explores key advancements in computerized facial beauty analysis, focusing on data-driven research and quantitative experiments. It aims to enhance practical facial beauty analysis by proposing more reliable and stable facial features, along with new models, methods, algorithms, and a beautification system. The text evaluates previous rules and models for facial beauty using computationally efficient mathematical approaches, particularly through large-scale database experiments. The first section provides an overview of facial beauty analysis, while the second presents foundational facial beauty features. The third section discusses hypotheses related to facial beauty, and the fourth defines data-driven analysis models. The authors conclude by detailing the implementation of their new facial beauty analysis system. Targeted at researchers, professionals, and postgraduate students in facial beauty analysis, computer vision, human-machine interfaces, pattern recognition, and biometrics, the content is also beneficial for those in interdisciplinary fields. The insights and methodologies offered are valuable for researchers, while the system design and implementation serve as practical models for engineers and practitioners.

The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the demand for behavioral and physiological characteristics in e-security and forensics. Significant advances in biometric techniques are now being applied in various fields, with medicine emerging as the most promising area. Medical biometrics involves using these characteristics for medical diagnosis and body care, aiming to address open problems in medicine through biometric technologies and systems. The International Conference on Medical Biometrics (ICMB 2008) marked a pivotal moment in this field, being the first major event dedicated to fostering collaboration between biometrics and medicine. The conference attracted numerous high-quality research papers, with 40 accepted for presentation—17 orally and 23 as posters. Additionally, a workshop on Computerized Traditional Chinese Medicine was held. Our efforts focus on raising awareness among researchers, organizing collaborative research, and providing a platform for discussion. This conference facilitated the exchange of practical experiences in applying advanced biometric technologies for medical diagnosis and care, further stimulating research in medical biometrics. We extend our gratitude to Max A. for his contributions to this endeavor.
