This interdisciplinary study introduces readers to Friedrich Schleiermacher’s diverse pathways of reflection and creative practice that are related to the field of translation. By drawing attention to Schleiermacher’s various writings on a range of subjects (including philology, criticism, hermeneutics, dialectics, rhetoric and religion), the author makes it clear that the frequently cited lecture Über die verschiedenen Methoden des Übersetzens (On the Different Methods of Translating) represents but a fraction of Schleiermacher’s contributions to modern-day insights into translation. The analysis of Schleiermacher’s various pathways of reflection on translation presented in this book leads to the conclusion that translation is part of the essence of the world, as it is a fundamental tool of our cognition and a foundation of our existence. In Schleiermacher’s works, transfer, translation, mediation, and communication underpin our very existence in the world and our self-awareness. At the same time, they represent fundamental categories for a project that focuses on the consolidation and assimilation – through translation – of that which is foreign, different, diverse.

Translation Studies has been in action in the Polish humanities since 1930s. The book gathers the most important contributions from Polish translation scholars working in the context of Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Linguistics. The essays offer insights into the conceptualisation of translation, stylistics and poetics, history and anthropology of translation. Most of them are made available in English for the first time. The editors’ introduction provides a panoramic backdrop for concepts, methodologies and applications. As part of the tendency to enlarge Translation Studies and include new contexts into its mainstream, this reader gives an overview of a rich area of translation scholarship from the centre of Europe, a crossroads of influences and traditions.

Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht das Bewußtsein des Ordnungswandels und des Ordnungsschwundes, das in Form von kunst- und literaturtheoretischen Schriften und narrativen Texten im zweiten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts artikuliert wird. Das Forschungsinteresse richtet sich hier auf das Frühwerk des schwedischen Schriftstellers und Nobelpreisträgers Pär Lagerkvist (1891-1974). Seine programmatische Schrift Ordkonst och bildkonst von 1913 wird als eine ausdrucksstarke Verkündung eines Ordnungswandels in der Ästhetik interpretiert. In den Novellen aus der Sammlung Järn och människor von 1915 wird das Thema der Fremdheit bzw. der Fremderfahrung aufgegriffen, um daran die mit dem 1. Weltkrieg in Zusammenhang stehende Erfahrung des Ordnungsschwundes und des Ordnungswandels in der Lebenswelt aufzuzeigen. Die Arbeit umfaßt zwei Analogiestudien, in denen die oben erwähnten Werke von Lagerkvist im Zusammenhang mit ausgewählten Werken des deutschen Expressionismus betrachtet werden. Die analytische Lektüre von Lagerkvists Texten und der Werke der deutschen Expressionisten führt zu der Schlußfolgerung, daß das Bewußtwerden eines weitverstandenen Ordnungsschwundes sich als Voraussetzung einer Reflexion über den Wandel der aktuellen Ordnung erweist. Diese Reflexion bildet dann die Grundlage der literarischen Artikulationen der Ordnungserfahrung und Ordnungserwartung.
