This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of Satellite Events held at the 19th International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management, EKAW 2014 in November 2014. EKAW 2014 hosted three satellite workshops: VISUAL 2014, International Workshop on Visualizations and User Interfaces for Knowledge Engineering and Linked Data Analytics, EKM1, the First International Workshop on Educational Knowledge Management and ARCOE-Logic 2014, the 6th International Workshop on Acquisition, Representation and Reasoning about Context with Logic. This volume also contains the accepted contributions for the EKAW 2014 tutorials, demo and poster sessions.

The rise of high-throughput experimental methods in life sciences is generating vast and complex data resources essential for studying organisms and diseases. This experimental data forms the basis for developing biological system models, which often require integrating diverse data sets. Once models are created, they generate new data and pose integration challenges related to interpretation, validation, and comparison. The Data Integration in the Life Sciences (DILS) Conference series unites data and knowledge management researchers from computer science with bioinformaticians and computational biologists to explore how emerging data integration techniques can meet the needs of the life sciences. DILS 2010, the seventh event in this series, took place in Gothenburg, Sweden, from August 25–27, 2010. The proceedings feature 14 peer-reviewed papers and 2 invited papers, covering topics such as ontology engineering—including evolution, matching, and debugging, which are crucial for semantic integration—Web services for data integration, and data and text mining techniques for identifying biomedical entities and their relationships. Additionally, the sessions introduced data integration solutions for applications in cancer, systems biology, and microarray experimental data, as well as methods for integrating ranked data in the life sciences.

    • In this book, the author develops an object-centered framework with specialized support of the part-of relation based on description logics. These logics are a family of object-centered knowledge representation languages tailored for describing knowledge about concepts and is-a hierarchies of these concepts. In addition to the representation and reasoning facilities provided by description logics for is-a, representation and reasoning facilities are introduced for part-of. Finally, the feasibility and the usefulness of the approach is demonstrated by applying the framework to various areas including domain modeling, agent-oriented scenarios, document management and retrieval, and composite concept learning.
