Exploring the nexus of American Studies and the Medical Humanities, this book examines the interdisciplinary interfaces between disease and American cultures and literatures. It traces the appropriation of yellow fever to legitimize the young nation and its embeddedness in discourses of race and gender from the late 18th until the end of the 19th century. Previously untapped textual and visual archives provide a heterogeneous base of canonical as well as previously disregarded works that are analyzed for yellow fever’s metaphorical and actual potential of risk and crisis. As a literary history of yellow fever epidemics, it firmly establishes the ideological, socio-political, visual, and cultural processing of the disease, which figures as invasive, inexplicable Other. Yellow Fever Years has received the Peter Lang Nachwuchspreis 2015.

This interdisciplinary study explores the legacies of Japanese American World War II internment experiences and the factors influencing the construction and mediation of cultural memory and national/ethnic identity in the United States. It discusses issues of contested memory and shows how once repressed historic events are selectively commemorated or even erased. By focusing on representations of Japanese American internment experiences recovered, reframed or created since the 1980s, the study acknowledges that these experiences continue to be reevaluated in a climate of ethnic politicization. Covering sites of memory ranging from historic places of Japanese American internment to memorials built both at centers of Japanese American cultural life as well as at centers of national cultural identity, the study also critically approaches sites - or rather sights - in cyberspace that may be visited only virtually, thus taking the scholarship of American memory studies into the digital realm.

Inwieweit eignet sich die durch ein Denkmal beschworene kollektive Erinnerung als Mittel zur Katharsis? Die Arbeit untersucht Wirkungszusammenhänge, welche die Errichtung des Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D. C., bestimmten. Für die amerikanische Gesellschaft wurde das Vietnam-Denkmal zum Symbol der Auseinandersetzung um den Krieg. Die öffentliche Rhetorik, die detailliert dargestellt wird, betonte dabei das Ziel der Aussöhnung zwischen Befürwortern und Gegnern des Vietnamkriegs. Die Denkmalerrichtung wurde jedoch nur dadurch möglich, daß man die Rechtfertigungs- und Schuldfrage ausklammerte, also ein «unpolitisches» Denkmal schuf. Das Frauendenkmal und die Dreisoldaten-Statue sind das Ergebnis weiterer Kompromisse. Die Wand mit den Namen der rund 58 000 Gefallenen wurde zu einer Art Klagemauer und sakralem Objekt. Dabei ist die Bedeutung der Namen und der Votivgaben im Kontext symbolischer Handlungen und der Generierung einer kollektiven Erinnerung zentral. Die amerikanische Kontroverse kann als Lehrbeispiel für die anhaltende deutsche Debatte über das Holocaust-Mahnmal verstanden werden.
