The Circum-Caribbean and its diasporas constitute a space of relations and disconnections. Historically, the Caribbean served as a bridgehead for the European conquest of the Americas and a point of exchange of human beings, ideas, and commodities. It also became a laboratory of modern forms of social, political, and economic production. Today, the region represents a multilingual space of conviviality for many different cultures, but is also the focus of the dissonances, ruptures and insularities produced by its distinct histories of colonialism and resistance. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to explore how (non-)circulation of ideas occurred historically in the glocal production of knowledge in and about the Caribbean and to formulate a clearer picture of who is creating which vision of the Caribbean, and how. The 33 contributions in this volume shed light on the transversal fields of (1) Academic and Artistic Approaches, (2) Arts and Visual Studies, (3) Environment and Sustainability, (4) Migration and Knowledge Circulation, (5) Entangled Histories and Memories.

The present volume focuses on a variety of Chicana/o cultural expressions and productions that have emerged from increasingly mobile subject positions in transnational settings. The collection traces the possibilities and limitations of becoming culturally mobile across national, social and linguistic borders, disciplinary and aesthetic frames as well as beyond confining modes of Chicana/o identity scripts. Informed by the ongoing dialogue between Literary and Cultural Studies, „Mobile Crossings“ explores a broad range of cultural phenomena that have both shaped and represented Mexican-American communities throughout the last thirty years in Chicana/o literature, visual art, theater, popular culture and transnational theory.

Die interdisziplinären Beiträge dieses Buches präsentieren die Ergebnisse studentischer Forschungsprojekte, die am Lateinamerika-Institut der Freien Universität Berlin auf der Grundlage einer Exkursion in das mexikanisch-US-amerikanische Grenzgebiet entstanden sind. Sie vermitteln einen Ein-druck der multiplen politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Räume innerhalb des Grenzraums zwischen Mexiko und den USA. Es werden unterschiedliche Bedeutungen der Grenze anschaulich gemacht: nicht nur als Ort des Übergangs von einem Staatsgebiet in ein anderes, sondern auch als diskursiver Ort für Sicherheitspolitiken, als Ort der Überschreitung geschlechts-spezifischer Normen oder als Raum für Kunst und als ästhetisches Konzept in Kulturproduktionen. Dabei dehnt sich die Grenze – über die geographische Fixierung hinaus – in den sozialen Raum zu beiden Seiten aus. Sie wird zu einem Kristallisationspunkt, an dem die kulturellen Praktiken von MigrantInnen neue soziale Räume erschaffen. Die Beiträge verdeutlichen, dass die ‚Grenze‘ als transnationaler und transkultureller Raum konzeptionell nicht homogen, sondern nur als dynamisches Phänomen erfahrbar ist.

Die literarische Verarbeitung von Bürgerkriegen steht im Mittelpunkt der 18 Aufsätze dieses Sammelbandes, der die Beiträge der Sektion „Bürgerkriege der Romania“ des Deutschen Romanistentages 2005 vereint. Die Vielfalt der literarischen Verfahren spiegelt sich in den unterschiedlichen Literaturen und Kulturen wider: von Frankreich über Rumänien bis hin zu Italien, Spanien und Portugal sowie von Algerien über Süd- und Mittelamerika bis Haiti. Die Autorinnen und Autoren analysieren, welche Arten von innergesellschaftlichen Gewaltkonflikten in den untersuchten Texten thematisiert werden und welches ästhetische Programm zur Verarbeitung dieser historischen Themen genutzt wird. Methodisch baut der Band auf dem ersten Teil der Reihe „Kollektive Gewalt – Krieg – Kultur“ auf, der die theoretischen Grundlagen zur Analyse ästhetischer Muster bei der künstlerischen Gestaltung des Themas „Bürgerkrieg“ legt. Zu den behandelten Werken zählen Romane von Marie Vieux-Chauvet, André Malraux, Reinaldo Arenas, Juan Goytisolo, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Nicolás Guillén, Horacio Castellanos Moya, Mircea Cărtărescu, Miguel Sousa Tavares, Bernardo Atxaga, Elio Vittorini, Beppe Fenoglio, Italo Calvino und Cesare Pavese.

Borderlands/La Frontera (1987) von Gloria Anzaldua, Loving in the War Years (1983) und The Last Generation (1993) von Cherrie Moraga entziehen sich einer einfachen Zuordnung: Sie fuhren unterschiedliche Sprachcodes und Genres zusammen und sind zwischen Literatur und Theorie angesiedelt. Die Texte der mexikanisch-amerikanischen Autorinnen verfolgen diverse Strategien, um cine im Prozess des Schreibens entstehende, vielfaltig verortete und gebrochene Identitat zu konstituieren. In ihnen uberlagern sich kulturelle Diskurse US-amerikanischer, mexikanischer und hispanoamerikanischer Provenienz. Sie pragen neue Begriffe wie New Mestiza, Borderlands/La Frontera und Queer Aztlan, die in die politische und kulturelle Emanzipationsbewegung der Chicanos in den USA feministische und `queere' Positionen einschreiben und uber diesen Kontext hinaus eine hohe Symbolkraft entwickeln. Im Gegensatz zu der vorherrschenden Rezeption dieser Werke als neue und traditionsunabhangige Texte zeigt die vorliegende Untersuchung, dass die Autorinnen durch- aus vorhandene Strategien nutzen und mit ihnen auf Sexualitatsdiskurse und Korperkonzepte sowie anthropologische und kulturtheoretische Diskurse zuruckgreifen. Die Arbeit verbindet romanistisch- lateinamerikanistische und angloamerikanistische Fach- und Forschungskompetenz und versteht sich als Beitrag zu einer neuen kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Literaturwissenschaft.
