Ervin Varga gehörte zur letzten Generation des ungarischen Judentums vor dessen Vernichtung durch die deutschen Faschisten und ihre ungarischen Kollaborateure. Er besuchte das Jüdische Gymnasium in Budapest, die beste Schule Ungarns, und wuchs im wohlhabenden und geistig aktiven jüdischen Bürgertum auf. Sein Onkel, der bedeutende neurologische Forscher Hugo Richter, verkörperte die herausragenden Leistungen dieser Gemeinschaft. Varga erlebte als Kind die zunehmend feindliche Umgebung des Horthy-Regimes, das von der Entrechtung der Juden zur planmäßigen Ermordung überging. 1944 wurde er im Alter von neunzehn Jahren in ein Zwangsarbeitslager eingewiesen und schließlich ins Todeslager Hidegség deportiert, wo er als einer der wenigen Überlebenden im Frühjahr 1945 von der Roten Armee befreit wurde. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Budapest, schwer krank und entkräftet, fand er heraus, dass seine Freundin sowie die meisten seiner Angehörigen ermordet worden waren. Varga studierte Medizin und wurde Facharzt für Neurologie, bevor er in die USA auswanderte und in Princeton lebte. Seine Lebenserinnerungen sind ein wertvoller und lehrreicher Augenzeugenbericht über das Leben der Budapester Juden vor dem Krieg, die Schrecken der Lager und seine Erfahrungen als Überlebender in Nachkriegsungarn.
