Germany's advantages in international competition crucially depend on the excellent level of skills of ist workers. Education and vocational training are of utmost importance not only on the macro-economic level but also for individual labour market prospects. This study analyses the effects of vocational training on individual employment and unemployment duration in West Germany. It stresses the importance of the problem of sample selectivity when evaluating vocational training or social programmes in general.
