Enabling group communication is a significant challenge for the future Internet, requiring attention to various issues related to services, applications, protocols, and infrastructure. These topics must be examined from multiple perspectives, necessitating diverse skill sets. To address this, an initiative was established to contribute to international efforts in group communication and related technologies. The European COST framework serves as a platform for fostering a community of interest, facilitating idea exchange, and supporting emerging researchers in the field. Launched in late 1998, this initiative aims to enhance European research and promote international collaboration. To achieve this, an annual technical workshop, the “International Workshop on Networked Group Communication,” was organized, with NGC’99 in Pisa marking the inaugural event. Despite being the first workshop and the tight timeline for submissions, the Call for Papers was remarkably successful, yielding 49 submissions, of which 18 were selected for the technical program. The proceedings feature a selection of these papers, addressing key issues in networked group communication research and development. Additionally, the program includes keynote speakers and invited talks from notable experts in the field.
