This volume forms the fourth part of the Cymbella synopsis, containing taxa in the genera Cymbopleura of the temperate zone with many remarks on taxa from the tropics and a large number of new taxa. Additionally, it contains the genera Delicata (the complex around Cymbella deliculata), Navicymbula (Cymbella pusilla), Gomphocymbellopsis (Cymbella ancyli) and Afrocymbella (the African species in the genus Gomphocymbella). This volume contains also supplements with taxa from the genera Encyonema, Encyonopsis, Cymbellopsis and Cymbella.
