The chair of mechanical process engineering at the University of Dortmund hosted the symposium "Spray Drying '01," focusing on applications, techniques, and advancements in spray drying and related processes. Spray dryers are essential in various industries for producing solid particles from liquid feeds like suspensions, solutions, or melts. Recent developments have enhanced the understanding of spray towers, while improvements in spraying systems and airflow distributors have optimized process performance. The conference aimed to facilitate information exchange on key topics, including the spraying and formation of liquid particles, heat and mass transfer between gas and particles, transition to solid state and particle morphology, and agglomeration of fine particles. Different customer requirements necessitate varying particle sizes and specifications, leading to a wide range of operational parameters. Discussions also covered operational conditions such as co- or countercurrent flow, heat recovery, secondary drying and agglomeration, dust removal and waste gas treatment, product separation and discharge, and process and moisture control. The conference took place from October 8 to 10, attracting 39 participants from outside Dortmund and 8 from the university. A post-session questionnaire indicated a strong interest in holding another meeting within two years, with a comprehensive catalogue of topics planned for future pres
