The author of this work, Arnold H. Price, is a historian and such provides a critical account of the experiences and impressions of the almost 90 years he lived during the 20th Century. As a youngster he witnessed the flowering of Weimar Germany as well as its political shortcomings, escaping the Nazi terror by emigrating to the United States in 1933. He recalls how he became an American and public historian, serving as research analyst in the Office of Strategic Services and the Department of State, followed by working as area specialist on matters German in the Library of Congress and ending his career as bibliographer for the American Historical Association. He provides a vivid picture of the dramatic interaction of personalities, research and public policy supplementing this account by excursions into his teaching career as well as his own research.
