SEM studied diatoms of different regions of the world ocean

Více o knize

The book presents extensive data on plankton diatoms collected from 75 stations during various Russian oceanographic expeditions, analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling sites span three phytogeographical regions: Arcto Boreal (Bering Sea, North Pacific, North Atlantic, White Sea), Tropical (Equatorial and Eastern Pacific near North and South American coasts), and Subantarctic and Antarctic (Atlantic and Pacific sectors, south of New Zealand). It features 139 plates with 560 SEM micrographs illustrating 110 diatom species, with centric species identified at twice the rate of pennate species. Detailed morphological descriptions, geographical, and ecological distributions are provided for nearly all species, including rare frustule structure peculiarities and size ranges. Most species belong to micro-phytoplankton, with a few in nano- and macro-phytoplankton categories. Seven distribution range types are examined: arcto-boreal, boreal-pacific, tropical, notal-antarctic, bipolar, boreal-notal, and cosmopolitan, detailing typical species and their ecological traits. The study reveals that neritic and panthalassic species are prevalent among plankton diatoms, while truly oceanic species are rare. Distribution patterns are discussed in relation to species types, noting that arcto-boreal and tropical neritic species show circumcontinental zonation, while panthalassic species exhibit latitudinal zonation.
