How are dissidence, resistance and mental destabilization expressed within the means of fine art? What kind of visual vocabulary can be used to supplement or counter mass-media representations? The Promise, The Land , an exhibition and catalogue, present ways in which Jewish-Israeli artists have come to terms with questions of history and identity in the ever-fractious Middle East. Included are works by such artists as Tal Adler; Oreet Ashery, who presents portraits of her alter ego Marcus Fisher, a Hassidic cross-gender Jew; Yael Bartana, whose video “Trembling Time” records cars coming to a stop on a four-lane highway in Tel-Aviv to pay tribute on Soldier's Memorial Day; Daniel Bauer; architect Zvi Efrat, curator of borderlinedisorder , a show-within-the-show originally planned for the 8th Architecture Biennial in Venice; Tirtza Even; Meir Gal, and others.
