Rehabilitation in the present day plays a basic role within the health care system. The increase in chronic diseases requires an efficient, highly specialized and economical rehabilitation system. In contrast to the long history of rehabilitation itself, research in rehabilitation is a relatively new scientific field. This book presents an overview of the topics investigated in projects which were undertaken in a rehabilitation research network in South West Germany. After an introduction to the German rehabilitation system and current rehabilitation research, approaches to the integration of in- and outpatient treatment concepts in rehabilitation are evaluated. In the section, „Differential indication“, investigations into specific rehabilitation methods which have been adapted to particular needs of patient subgroups are presented. The chapter, „Methods and Health Economics“, focuses on methodological and economical aspects applied in three rehabilitation research projects. Finally, the „Interventions and evaluation“ articles describe four rehabilitation interventions in the field of psychosomatic, cardiac and oncological rehabilitation. This book is mainly designed for scientists and practitioners in the field of rehabilitation. It provides detailed information on the German rehabilitation system, and on current concepts in rehabilitation treatment and research.
