Language & the brain: the neural basis of foreign language proficiency

This book delves into neurolinguistics, the study of the brain's neural mechanisms that govern language comprehension, production, and acquisition. It explores the distinct neural bases for various language subcategories, including syntax, semantics, phonetics, phonology, and morphology/lexicology. Previous research has largely focused on age-related variables in foreign language (L2) proficiency, overlooking significant individual differences that persist even when these factors are controlled. This work investigates two additional influences on linguistic ability: musical aptitude and gender. While it also touches on the brain-language relationship concerning native languages, the primary emphasis is on the neurological foundations of foreign language proficiency. By analyzing over 400 peer-reviewed studies from reputable neurology journals, the author—an interpreter and dedicated linguist—aims to clarify whether neurological and organizational factors in the brain, along with musical talent and age- and gender-related influences, contribute to variations in foreign language proficiency, native-like pronunciation, and recovery rates after brain injuries or strokes.
