The focus is primarily on the works of artists shaped by or shaping the Burg Giebichenstein art school, including Bernd Göbel, Ulrich Klieber, Marie-Luise Meyer (2009 Kunstpreis des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt), and Thomas Rug (2011 Kunstpreis). The unique artistic personalities and their oeuvres are linked to broader art and cultural theories, leading to the thesis of a Pavlovization and Taylorization of a sensationalized culture, coinciding with the economization and digitization of society, and a fundamental shift in the relationship between public and private spheres. Within this context, contemporary art is revealed to be in a structurally precarious situation, despite the allure of high-profile art events and the booming art market. The attention economy, fixated on fame and sensation, also permeates the art world. The realm of art is part of a cultural transmodernity, where distinctions between modernity and postmodernity begin to blur and ultimately vanish. Critical aesthetics must respond to this situation, rather than ceding the discourse to a largely affirmative media theory that merely shadows new media techniques. This book serves as that critical response.
