9th International Symposium on Turkey Diseases

AuszugThe Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Free University Berlin, Germany, in cooperation with the German branch of the World Veterinary Poultry Association held the 9th International Symposium on Turkey Diseases in Berlin, Germany, from June 21st to 23rd 2012. The symposium was organized to stimulate the exchange of current information related to turkey diseases and to help focus attention on specific problems and encourage new approaches to solve them. At the symposium 43 oral presentations in 7 main sections were given. The first two sections with 14 papers were devoted to topics related to turkey production and the problem of antimicrobial resistance, as well as subjects related to animal welfare and diseases control. This was followed by a section, which covered several bacterial diseases and problems related to their diagnosis and control (9 papers). Sections four (7 papers) addressed food borne pathogens as well as vaccination and problems related to cleaning and disinfection. The 5th section (5 papers) dealt with feed and common diseases of malnutrition (4 papers) and one with respiratory disease. In the final two sections 8 papers were dedicated to enteric disorders, tumour diseases, viral hepatitis, Turkey meningoencephalitis, coccidia and Histomonosis. 180 scientists and experts from 23 countries (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America) attended the symposium. It is my sincere pleasure to acknowledge all the speakers for their co-operation and willingness to share their expertise with the global turkey family. I also wish to use this opportunity to express my appreciation to our sponsors. I am most grateful for their generosity, which was essential to conduct a symposium with such broad participation. Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to all individuals who worked in the planning and co-ordination of this event, especially the staff of the Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Free University Berlin. I hope that the information presented in these proceedings will become a valuable reference for all participants and attendees. The next 10th “Hafez” - International Symposium on Turkey Diseases will be held in Berlin Germany in Mai /June 2014. I hope to see you in Berlin.
