Towards the end of the 19th century, a new European interest in non-European regions emerged, driven by the global connectivity facilitated by railways and shipping lines. This development made the world increasingly accessible to many, including those from the Czech lands. Czech scientists, publicists, and travellers began to explore and engage with the world, seeking to understand their identity within a global context, particularly after the establishment of the Czechoslovak state in 1918. Through travel accounts from Africa, Asia, Australia, and Latin America, the Czech perspective on colonialism, racism, and globalization is examined. These narratives reveal how Czech travellers grappled with their identity as representatives of a "small nation," often feeling like "second-class travellers" in a broader global landscape. The exploration of these themes highlights the complexities of Czech identity and their engagement with global issues during this transformative period. The underlying dissertation received the Grete-Mostny-Prize from the University of Vienna, underscoring its academic significance.
