Anti-inflammatory and analgetic agents in canine orthopedics In this retrospective study, the patient files of dogs were analyzed that were presented from 01.01.2010 to 31.08.2015 at the Small Animal Clinic of Freie Universität Berlin for arthritic lameness. The cause of lameness had to involve the carpal, elbow, shoulder, tarsal, stifle and/or hip joint(s). The aim was to compare the frequently used anti-inflammatory agents Rimadyl®, Previcox®, Cimalgex® plus Gabapentin®, Phen-Pred®, Metacam®, Novaminsulfon® and Trocoxil® with respect to their efficacy and adverse effects. None of the analgesics showed either a significantly higher efficacy or a significantly higher occurrence of adverse effects than the others. Over all, a pronounced improvement of function by one degree of lameness was achieved in 48.2 %, by two degrees in 18.2 % and by three degrees in 4 % of cases. In 85 % of those patients that were only treated with the medication that was first chosen, no adverse effects were noted. In cases where a second analgesic was applied, the rate of adverse effects almost doubled at 28.9 %. When, as a result, a third medication was substituted, only one patient showed adverse effects. All but one of the adverse effects noted here affected the gastrointestinal tract. Previcox® had the least tendency to cause adverse effects, while Phen-Pred® had the highest occurrence of adverse effects. It was of note that a significant increase of adverse events was found when an analgesic was combined with the antacid Omeprazol®. With regard to the individual joints, none of the four groups was found to be significantly more effective than any of the others. For the treatment of pain in the hip joints, however, Previcox® tended towards a higher efficacy (p = 0.054) than either one of the other medications or the combination of Cimalgex® plus Gabapentin®.
