Ecclesiastical institutions significantly shaped normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Despite this, legal historiography has largely overlooked the role of ecclesiastical normativity in forming the ‘derecho indiano,’ focusing instead on state-centered legal frameworks. To address this gap, the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History organized seminars across Latin America, fostering interdisciplinary research on ecclesiastical norms and institutions from the 16th to 19th centuries. This volume, the second in a series documenting the seminars held in Mexico City, Lima, Bogotá, and São Paulo, features eight peer-reviewed case studies that explore notable ecclesiastical institutions within the viceroyalties of Peru and Río de la Plata. The studies cover significant locations now part of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile, focusing on the archdioceses of Lima and La Plata/Charcas. The first section discusses ecclesiastical legislation by Toribio de Mogrovejo, the second Archbishop of Lima. Subsequent sections delve into canon law litigation, the roles of religious orders, diocesan administration, and the ius patronatus during Chile's independence movement. Collectively, these studies open new avenues for research in legal and ecclesiastical history, highlighting the interplay between local adaptations of norms and broader global debates, while enhancing understanding of the religious normative landscape in Span
