Catalogue of archaeological sites Navkūr Plain, Al-Ḫāzĩr River Basin

Více o knize

The Upper Greater Zab Archaeological Reconnaissance (UGZAR) project conducted an extensive archaeological survey in Iraqi Kurdistan, covering over 3,000 km² along the Greater Zab River, north and northwest of Erbil. From 2012 to 2017, a Polish team from Adam Mickiewicz University documented 313 archaeological sites, 110 caves, and 78 heritage monuments, including churches, monasteries, mosques, castles, mills, tombs, and cemeteries, as well as 4 rock reliefs. Nearly 20,000 artefacts, spanning from the Late Neolithic (Hassuna culture) to the early 20th century, were collected and documented. Rafał Koliński focuses on archaeological sites in the Navkūr Plain, detailing previous fieldwork by the Iraqi Antiquity Service and analyzing historical aerial imagery from U2 and CORONA spy missions. The catalogue includes 38 sites along streams feeding into the al-Ḫāzīr river, located about 10 km west of the survey's western limit. The richly illustrated volume presents descriptions of each site, including GIS data, assessments of threats and damages, and analyses of settlement history. It features site plans, photographs, and an extensive overview of surface finds, primarily pottery, supported by drawings, color photographs, and technological descriptions.
