Summary Losses and durability play a major role in the design phase of flow guiding and/or flow surrounded devices, machines or facilities. Therefore, design guidelines that reduce losses and increase durability should be applied from the very beginning in the design process. The present doctoral thesis deals with the fundamentals of flow optimised designs of generic air outlets. For this purpose an existing air outlet is investigated in detail regarding his fluid mechanics in a first step. For the tests the flap angle and the mass flow were varied. The main focus of this study was the influence of the flap angle and the mass flow on the flow topology and the drag of the different configurations. In a second step, based on the achieved experimental flow data, specific design changes which influences the airflow around the air outlet and the inner flow were developed and investigated thoroughly. Here, also the efficiency, was taken into account. It could be shown, that a design change which influences the airflow around the air outlet leads to a much higher decrease in drag compared to a design change which influences the inner flow. The main results of this study are basic design advices for future generic air outlets which should be used in the design process in order to reduce losses and increase the durability.
